Why Linux?

We are often asked why we only use Linux for hosting websites and web 2.0 applications. The April 2010 Server Survey shows 54% of servers are Linux based compared to only 25% MS (19% other). There is a good reason for that. Most servers are run by professionals whose livelyhood depends on doing it the most reliable and cost-effective way. The world's top 10 most reliable hosting companies were ALL Linux based.

Back then our work was almost exclusively for those who wanted websites with significant database management capability at the 'back end'. Often this meant 'Content Management' driven by online or offline applications from a database stored (hosted) alongside the (html) web pages. We even built our very own content management system called 'Domain 1' and we used it to build some of the largest on-line business directories in the UK.

In line with our determination to keep doing things better we committed substantial resourses just to researching the very best technologies and the best value-for-money means of deploying them.

Today we use technology that allows us to do in days what used to take us months. It would be easy to get 'carried away' with the technology for its own sake - but we have never done that. Always firmly in our mind is that a website is as good as the business benefit it delivers!

Today, people expect much more from their website than they did ten or even five years ago. But a lot of what many people think is 'good' about a website is just plain 'bad'! A pretty, glitzy website is about as useful as a chocolate teapot to most businesses if it delivers little or no real benefit. If the aim is to spend loads of money showing off how clever you are then there are plenty of people doing just that. Customers don't go to a business website to be impressed by the software engineer. They go there to get information. If the information is not there or is too hard to find then they simply go somewhere else - usually in less than 12 seconds!
